The Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Obtain the Job That Changed My Life

In the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to Europe with a travel partner. Since my travel mate was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had planned a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and began chatting with other diners.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I my profession was, and I shared that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the university – adjacent to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I should apply for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The Iraqi student walked over to me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but right away told my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a city where anything feels possible – she said: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his identity, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in so many ways. I lacked the bravery or self-assurance to reach out at an Ivy League university and seek a position. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a role in Europe where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
